Ground Transportation

Mileage Reimbursement: For local attendees not staying at the resort, daily mileage reimbursement may be claimed at the rate of $0.50 per mile. For those coming in from out of town, LSSTC will reimburse actual costs up to $110 for round-trip travel from the Tucson or Phoenix airports to the resort. (Travel funds are limited; those expecting reimbursement through LSST must have prior approval.)

Shared Rides: For your convenience, and to save money, we are coordinating shared rides with AZ Stagecoach and AAA Transportation from the Tucson and Phoenix airports to and from the meeting hotel. Email Cathy Petry at petry@email.arizona.edu with your itinerary if you want a ride or already have a rental car and want to offer a ride to another meeting participant. (This will help you stay within our ground transportation reimbursement limit of $110.)

We will coordinate groups depending on arrival/departure time and book a group reservation to get the lowest rate. Contact Cathy before making any online reservations.

Ground Transportation from Tucson: LSSTC will reimburse actual costs up to $110 for round-trip travel from the Tucson International Airport (TIA) to the resort. Rental cars are expected to cost about $300/week; however, Enterprise quotes a rate of $92 for 5 days. A cab is impractical and expensive. Arizona Stagecoach operates shared-ride van service for each arriving flight at TIA, providing the most cost efficient method for traveling to the resort. Arizona Stagecoach has a ticket counter inside TIA. Reservations may be made at: http://www.azstagecoach.com/

Ground Transportation from Phoenix: Some participants may prefer to fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor airport and rent a car to get to the resort. We prefer that people carpool to keep the number of rental cars and reimbursement costs to a minimum. AAA Transportation can provide shuttle service for up to about 10 passengers for $280 or up to 32 passengers for $500. Please email your itinerary to Cathy Petry petry@email.arizona.edu to make arrangements.

The effort to build the LSST is led by the LSST Corporation, a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation formed in 2003, with headquarters in Tucson, AZ.  Financial support for LSST comes from the National Science Foundation with additional contributions from private foundation gifts, grants to universities, and in-kind support from Department of Energy laboratories and other LSST Member Institutions.  In 2011, the LSST construction project was established as an operating center under management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA).
